This project focuses on the development of Eye Beauty, a conceptual brand and innovative tool designed to address challenges faced by individuals with hypermobility and motor disabilities when handling makeup packaging. The initiative began with the creation of “The Helping Hand,” a low-fidelity prototype tool, and later evolved into a comprehensive brand design that embodies empowerment, creativity, and inclusivity.
This project resulted in the creation of a low-fidelity prototype for the “The Helping Hand” and a detailed conceptual brand design for Eye Beauty. While the tool requires further research and collaboration to address engineering challenges, the branding captures the essence of innovation and accessibility. The project emphasized my ability to combine product development with strategic branding, highlighting the transformative power of inclusive design in the beauty industry.
The intended users for this project are individuals with conditions such as arthritis, hyper-mobility, and other motor disabilities, representing a significant portion of the population. For example, 13.7% of U.S. adults, equating to approximately 40 million people, experience mobility-related challenges. Eye Beauty aims to bridge the gap in the beauty industry by creating tools and designs that foster accessibility and self-expression.
The potential for Eye Beauty lies in its ability to redefine how makeup packaging and tools can be designed to be inclusive and innovative. This includes expanding into beauty accessories and merchandise that align with the brand’s values of adaptability, creativity, and individuality.
As the sole creator of this project, I undertook the roles of designer, researcher, and strategist. I conducted user interviews, collaborated with an inventor, and refined the tool’s design through iterative testing. In addition to the technical development of the “The Helping Hand”, I conceptualized and designed the Eye Beauty brand, developing its visual identity, mission, and logo placement strategies.
I began brainstorming and conducting extensive research to define the problem I wanted to address. During a visit to a friend with hyper-mobility issues, I noticed the challenges she faced in opening makeup packaging. This observation sparked the idea of creating a tool that could make such tasks effortless. I started developing the concept for the “The Helping Hand” , a product aimed at solving these accessibility challenges.
I conducted interviews with individuals experiencing mobility issues and began designing the shape of the tool. The design incorporated features for stability, ease of alignment, and the ability to open clamshell packaging and cut through cellophane. I collaborated with inventor Bruce Ferris, who provided insights into functionality and materials. After realizing that the tool’s shape and engineering required adjustments, I returned to the drawing board to address these challenges.
With the tool design requiring further research and refinement, I pivoted to brand development. I created Eye Beauty, a conceptual brand that embodies self-expression and inclusivity. The brand’s logo was designed to reflect its values, symbolizing vision, individuality, and creativity. The final deliverables included a low-fidelity prototype of the ”The Helping Hand” and a comprehensive conceptual design for Eye Beauty.
Eye Beauty was born from a journey of resilience, reinvention, and self-expression. Founded by a transgender woman and military brat, this brand is grounded in the transformative power of makeup—a force that gives you the freedom to embrace who you are and rewrite your own story. For me, makeup is more than just a product; it’s a tool for confidence, a canvas for creativity, and a means of empowerment.
The logo uses a carefully chosen color palette to convey sophistication and versatility. From the earthy Mountain Green to the luxurious Golden Crown, the colors reflect a balance of nature, elegance, and timeless appeal, making the design adaptable.
The Eye Beauty logo was carefully designed to align with the brand’s mission and is showcased across various applications. From creative makeup looks to minimalistic packaging, the logo adapts seamlessly, adding an elegant and bold identity to each product. As shown in the provided collage, the logo blends harmoniously with its environment while maintaining its distinctive features. This thoughtful placement highlights the brand’s ability to balance artistry and functionality, ensuring its design remains impactful in all contexts.
Eye Beauty is more than just a conceptual brand—it represents a commitment to inclusivity and innovation in the beauty industry. From designing an accessible tool to developing a brand that embodies empowerment and individuality, this project showcases the intersection of technical innovation and creative vision.
By prioritizing accessibility, I aim to redefine how beauty products are designed and perceived, ensuring that everyone can experience the confidence and creativity that makeup provides.
